Date Sold 12/27/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]; 44 pages) (Learn More) Columbia Pictures 1930-31, the 1930 Columbia Pictures campaign book ("Columbia Pictures Announces The Superior Twenty Proved Product"), sent to theater owners to encourage them to show Columbia movies. The book includes 44 pages with two-page spreads on Columbia's upcoming movies (there is a full-page ad for the movie on the right side and more information about the movie and/or the director on the left side; see our images). Note that this was at the time when Columbia was making the transition from secondary studio to a first rate studio, and of course, Frank Capra was a big part of that transition! But they did not realize how big a role he would play at Columbia when this book was created, and there is a 2-page ad for his "Dirigible", with an image and blurb about him on the facing page. There is also a great ad for "The Miracle Woman", but at the time that ad was created, Capra had not yet been assigned to that movie, and the facing page promotes Stanwyck (as the "greatest find of the year"). Some of the other movies included are The Criminal Code, Africa Speaks, Fifty Fathoms Deep, and many more! Just one year later, when they made the 1931-32 campaign book, Frank Capra would be the main focus of the entire book! We have included images of the covers of the book and thirteen of the two-page spreads (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones!). Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that some of the movies listed in this book may never have been made at all, and some had their titles changed, and some had their cast or director changed! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this campaign book, and it sold for $380! Condition: very good to fine. The book has very minor wear and is in really nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
