Date Sold 9/6/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Tell it to the Marines, the 1926 George W. Hill silent United States Marine Corps (USMC) military war romantic love triangle adventure comedy melodrama ("Made with the co-operation and endorsement of the U.S. Marine Corps"; about a tough Marine Sergeant who helps turn a spoiled young man into a "man", while both of them pursue a beautiful Navy nurse) starring Lon Chaney Sr., William Haines, Warner Oland, Eleanor Boardman, Eddie Gribbon, and Carmel Myers. Note that the technical adviser was Marine Corps Gen. Smedley Butler, and he and star Lon Chaney became great friends, and that lasted after the movie until Chaney's unfortunate death in 1930 (the director on this film, George W. Hill, and his co-star William Haines were both pallbearers at his funeral). Urban legend has it that the great success of this movie caused enlistments into the Marines to rise drastically, and the plot of this movie was "borrowed" for several World War II movies! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this really poignant still shows Marine Lon Chaney Sr. far from home, and superimposed in the photo is an image of his wife and daughter by a Christmas tree, and he is reading a letter from them, knowing that he will not get to see them. Note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Note that this is one of 100 deluxe oversized stills (measuring 11" x 14" or similar) which were consigned to us, and they all originated from the legendary James Card Collection! James Card was a film preservationist who, starting in 1948, worked at the newly created George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and he helped build their massive motion picture collection, preserving movies that had been forgotten at that time. In 1955, he discovered that Louise Brooks was living as a recluse in New York City, and he persuaded her to move to Rochester, where she wrote many letters and some books about her legendary career. Not only do these 100 oversized stills (which we are auctioning individually) have wonderful "provenance", but there is also no fear that they are not from their first release (and many of the stills have photographer stamps on the back or embossed, and some have other information on the back, and several have a stamp that identifies them as being from the "James Card Collection"! Condition: very good. There is a partial diagonal crease in the top right corner and a few creases and small smudges in small parts of the borders. Learn More about condition grades
