Date Sold 2/18/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) The Chinese Cat, the 1944 Phil Rosen Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers' Character") starring Sidney Toler ("as Charlie Chan"), Mantan Moreland, Joan Woodbury, Benson Fong (as Tommy Chan, #3 Son), Ian Keith, Betty Blythe, Anthony Warde, and I. Stanford Jolley. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Finally, note that, for unknown reasons, first release movie paper from this one 1940s Charlie Chan movie is incredibly rare, maybe even more rare than any of the 1930s titles! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, ANY posters from this movie are incredibly rare! We have only previously auctioned a different example of the insert and one example of the one-sheet (23 years ago) until we received this insert! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had creases and surface paper loss on the folds. It was folded 2" from the top, and it had pinholes, tears, and stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
