A Paperbacked German Art Exhibition Poster (measures 32 1/4" x 45 3/4" [82 x 116 cm]) (Learn More) Ausstellung Fur Jagd Und Schiesswesen (literally translates to "Exhibition For Hunting And Shooting"), the 1906 German poster promoting an art exhibition which was held in July at the 15th German Federal Shooting Festival in Munich, Germany. Note that this poster features Ludwig Hohlwein art of a stag and a target and it was the second poster that he created. His first two posters in 1906 were both hunting scenes and both were highly praised at the time by contemporary art critics as mature and accomplished pieces. Throughout his life, Hohlwein often dealt with animal and hunting topics. As a passionate hunter, he was often a guest of Duke Ludwig Wilhelm in Bavaria, and as a sponsoring member of the "Zoologischer Garten Munchen" association, he designed several postcards and posters for the zoos in Munich and Nuremberg between 1908 and 1912, one of which still promotes the Munich Zoo. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Because this poster was paperbacked onto a very thin paper backing, it will be sent rolled in a tube. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had a 10" tear in the right of the top border that separated a piece from the rest of the poster, and only slightly entered the image background. Otherwise, the poster had some light horizontal creases near the center and some minor border wear. It appears the poster was paperbacked solely to re-attach the piece at the top, and no other restoration was performed. This great poster will display well on the new owner's wall (see our image)!
