eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8r0418 MONTE CRISTO herald 1922 John Gilbert as Edmond Dantes, Virginia Brown Faire, ultra rare! Date Sold 5/13/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 4 3/4" x 9" [12 x 23 cm]; 1 page) (Learn More) Monte Cristo, the 1922 Emmett J. Flynn silent lost fortune romantic revenge melodrama ("The three strongest passions known in a lifetime - Love! Hate! Revenge!"; "Alexandre Dumas famous romance"; based on the novel "by Alexandre Dumas") starring John Gilbert (in the title role as Edmond Dantes, the Count of Monte Cristo), Estelle Taylor (as Mercedes), Robert McKim (as De Villefort), William V. Mong (as Caderousse), Virginia Brown Faire (as Haidee), Spottiswoode Aitken (as Abbe Faria), Albert Prisco (as Danglars), and Renee Adoree. Note that a restored version of this movie was released on DVD in 2008, and apparently director Flynn was extremely faithful to the novel, and did a fine job adapting it! Note that John Gilbert was billed as "Jack Gilbert" in this movie (which is how he was billed in movies at this time). He had uncredited roles in 1915 and then had credited roles in 1916, but he still spent the next several years not achieving major stardom. One of his first major roles was in 1922 when he starred in this early version of "The Count of Monte Cristo". Of course, he would become a top star of the mid 1920s, and then he would co-star with a very young Greta Garbo, and the rest, as they say, is history! Finally, note that the best remembered adaptation of this novel was filmed as "The Count of Monte Cristo" in 1934 starring Robert Donat, and there have been many, many subsequent versions in the decades since! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY first release movie paper from this movie is extremely rare. We have only previously auctioned a lobby card and a still from the first release this movie, and NO other first release movie paper of any kind, until we received this herald!
