A 1939 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Dracula, the classic 1931 Tod Browning Universal vampire monster horror thriller ("The Greatest of all Horror Thrillers"; "The Vampire Thriller!"; "The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!"; "Do vampires really exist?"; "From the famous novel & play by Bram Stoker") starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as Count Dracula), David Manners, Helen Chandler, Dwight Frye (if there had been a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 1931, Frye would have surely won it for his wild over-the-top portrayal as Renfield!), Edward Van Sloan (as Professor Abraham Van Helsing), Frances Dade, and Herbert Bunston

Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful scene was used in both the 1938 and 1939 re-release sets (see below). This card is from the 1939 re-release, and we have only ever auctioned it once before by itself (two years ago, when it sold for $980!), although we also auctioned one example of this scene from the 1938 set, but that was 18 years ago, when it sold for $822! The person who purchased this card two years ago has now reconsigned it, so it is still only one of two examples of this card we have ever auctioned!

Also note that this classic horror movie was re-released in 1938, just seven years after its first release. Apparently it proved extremely popular in that first re-release, because it stayed in release into 1939, and more movie paper was needed (surely because they ran out of 1938 movie paper), and they printed a 1939 set of lobby cards, with at least some different scenes (we have not seen the entire set). We have noted the copyright date on this card, for those who care about this distinction (we have previously auctioned lobby cards with a 1938 copyright and also others with a 1939 copyright, so we know this was intentionally done and was not an error).
Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: good to very good. Someone started to fold the card horizontally, but they likely thought better of it, and there is a crease going from the middle of the left border into the girl's cheek, but it is almost invisible beyond that point. There is a vertical scuff mark and some faint stains in the right of the girl's cheek. There is a pair of staple holes in the background to the left of the girl's head and some tiny pairs of staple holes around the edges. Someone once did slight touch up to the two staple holes in the background, but otherwise made no attempt at restoration to the card. Obviously, the card can be displayed as it is, or restoration could be performed, but please look at our super-sized image and read the above carefully before bidding on this ultra rare card.
