An Original Vintage Folded One-Sheet Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 40" [71 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by Marine reservist Major Bill Hendricks. Hendricks and his wife wanted to do something tangible for the many children after World War II who would not get toys as presents, and together the couple collected thousands of toys and redistributed them. But because Hendricks was Director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio, he was able to massively expand the campaign, enlisting the help of many celebrities. The following year, in 1948, he was able to convince Walt Disney to have his design department create the toy train logo that the program has long been associated with, and Walt Disney also had a special one sheet created which is an appeal for Toys for Tots, and which has Mickey and Donald sitting on the train cars holding a giant bag filled with toys with the word "GIVE" on it, and "U.S. Marine Corps Reserve" below it. That poster is undated, but it has "Copyright Walt Disney Productions" printed in the bottom right! That one sheet likely was displayed in theaters that would collect for Toys for Tots between movies, and it is unbelievably rare (among the most rare Disney posters there are)! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: As noted above, this Walt Disney poster is unbelievably rare. This is the very first time we have auctioned it. It is undated, but based on our research it is almost certainly from 1948, although it could be from a year or two later. The winner of this auction will have an exceptionally rare poster in their collection! Condition: good. The poster had separation and small paper loss in the bottom 5" of the vertical fold. Someone put tape on the back of that area and it slightly bleeds through to the front. The poster also was attached to walls with tape around the edges and that tape is mostly gone but it has left tape stains in those areas, and in two places it slightly extends into the yellow background. There is 1" of separation and tiny paper loss in the bottom two crossfolds and there are creases along the folds. There is some surface paper loss on the back of the bottom of the poster (on the back of the "ORPS" of "CORPS") and you can slightly tell that from the front. In spite of all these defects, the poster's image is mostly unaffected, and after proper linenbacking this extremely rare poster will look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
