A Linenbacked Italian Advertising Poster (measures 55" x 77" [140 x 196 cm]) (Learn More) James Hopps & Son, the 1920s Italian liquor alcohol advertising poster promoting the purchase of Marsala wine. Marsala wine was traditionally used as an aperitif between the first and second courses of a meal. Note that this poster features great artwork of a woman riding a four-horse chariot on top of the earth while holding a bottle of the product in the air. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had small tears and small paper loss in the top of the bottom panel, which overlapped the bottom of the top panel. Otherwise, it had minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Unfortunately, either because the poster was mishandled after it was backed, or more likely, because the backer did not use the proper procedure, the top of the bottom section is "lifting" from the linen, and also there are many scattered areas throughout the poster where small parts of the poster are slightly lifting from the linen. Certainly, any talented restorer could remove this poster from the old linen and properly re-back it, but bear this considerable expense in mind before bidding on this poster.
