An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Color 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still #2 (Learn More) Jock Mahoney was born Jacques O'Mahoney, and was of French and Irish heritage. He was an actor from the 1940s to the 1980s. He was a star athlete at the University of Iowa and an aviator in the U.S. Marines. After he got out of the service, he became a stunt man, and he soon began playing the leads in action and western movies. He is best remembered from playing Tarzan in several movies (he was the thirteenth actor to play Tarzan, and he would sign Tarzan items as "Tarzan No 13"). He also had starring roles in two TV series, The Range Rider and Yancy Derringer. Some of his roles include: The End, A Time to Love and a Time to Die, Away All Boats, The Land Unknown, and Battle Hymn. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 70. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Jock Mahoney! Also note that although this still was "printed in Great Britain", it has full NSS information. Perhaps it was intended to be used in both countries (we have heard from collectors who saw these color stills in U.S. theaters at the time the movies were released, but we have not heard from any English collectors as to whether they were used in England at that time). If any English collector knows if this was or was not used in English theaters when the movies were released, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this is an original vintage still, but that it was signed for the Svehlas at a later date. Note that this signed still comes to us directly from the collection of Gary and Susan Svehla, who have been extremely active in the horror/sci-fi hobby for decades. Here is a brief biography of the Svehlas: In the summer of 1963, 13-year-old Gary Svehla published the first issue of his horror film fanzine, GORE CREATURES (which became MIDNIGHT MARQUEE in 1976 and continues to this day). By the end of 1963, Gary purchased his very first movie poster, an original Universal insert from GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, for which he paid $3.00. That was the beginning of Gary collecting horror and sci-fi movie material as well as the beginning of his collection of stills bought at conventions and from other collectors, which he used to illustrate his magazine. In 1986 Gary and his wife Susan sponsored the first FANEX horror and science fiction movie convention, which continued for 19 years. FANEX featured the greatest celebrities (actors, directors, special effects masters, etc.) from the horror film genre. Beginning in 1995 MIDNIGHT MARQUEE PRESS, INC. was created by Gary and Susan, an independent book publisher, which by 2010 published well over 100 titles. They have also produced and directed two independent horror films as well as releasing Feb. 2011 a 4-hour documentary, Midnight Madness, The History of Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Films, based on the guest interviews from FANEX. All of the signed items from the Svehlas' collection were either obtained from guests at their shows, or were purchased from longtime friends, and we feel certain this autograph is genuine (note that many of the signed items from their collection are personalized to one or both of them). About the Collection this Item Comes From Note that this item (and 37 others we are auctioning this week, each in its own auction) was consigned to us by a man who was a major movie memorabilia dealer from the 1980s on. During that time, he would regularly purchase collections of movie memorabilia from both dealers and collectors, and in some of those collections he purchased autographed items, and over the years he did not re-sell any of the autographed items. Now he has gathered up together all of his autographed items and consigned them to us. So all of these 38 autographed items we are auctioning were purchased by this dealer from longtime dealers and collectors, and we feel it is quite likely that the autograph on this item is authentic! Note that each of the 38 items from this consignor all have this paragraph on them. Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
