Date Sold 2/18/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Arrowsmith, the 1931 John Ford medical doctor romantic fictional biography melodrama ("The great American novel now becomes the great American motion picture!"; "He devoted his life to service... and his heart to the love of one woman"; "From the Nobel Prize novel by Sinclair Lewis"; about the life of a dedicated doctor, from his earliest days in medical school through a long distinguished career; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Ronald Colman (in the title role as Dr. Martin Arrowsmith), Helen Hayes, Richard Bennett, Myrna Loy, and A.E. Anson. Note that there is something very ironic about the crediting United Artists used for the source novel. When Lewis wrote Arrowsmith, he was voted the Pulitzer Prize for it, but he refused it. In 1930, he was given the Nobel Prize for Literature, not specifically for any one novel, and he accepted it. Samuel Goldwyn, the producer of the movie, wanted to advertise that this was an award-winning novel, so he combined the two above facts to get the tagline "from the Nobel Prize novel", which is not strictly true! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this first release one-sheet, and that was 28 years ago, when it sold for $3,300! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had pretty minor wear on the folds. It had a long diagonal tear in the right of the top border extending through the "D" and down through the "M", continuing through the "O" and going through the top of Colman's hair. It had paper loss in the lower right border extending into the yellow background and slightly affecting the top of the "H". There was a tear at the left side of the paper loss, running through the middle of Hayes' hair and continuing through her cheek and chin, and ending in Colman's shirt. The poster had some other tears and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer did an excellent job linenbacking the poster. You can see slight signs of the defects in the background areas, but they are not very distracting, and the poster displays really well, and the other restoration is not really noticeable, except from the closest of inspection. This very rare poster will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall! Learn More about condition grades
