An Original Vintage Theatrical Tri-Folded Teaser Twenty-Four-Sheet Movie Poster (24sh; measures approximately 9' x 20') (Learn More) Hud, the classic 1963 Martin Ritt (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Texas family relationship modern-day-cowboy cattle rancher melodrama ("Paul Newman is 'HUD'! The man with the barbed wire soul!"; "Why 'Hud'?"; "Because of the unusual nature of this film we will not reveal the story"; "From a novel by Larry McMurtry"; about one of the screen's all time greatest heels, Hud Bannon, superlatively played by Paul Newman who was robbed of an Oscar) starring Paul Newman (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Hud), Melvyn Douglas (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Patricia Neal (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Brandon DeWilde, and Whit Bissell. Note that this movie was originally titled "Hud Bannon", but the title was shortened to simply "Hud". Paramount was worried about how the movie would do, especially because its central character was such an unlikable person, and they created a VERY unusual ad campaign, starting with a 24-sheet that solely showed an image of Newman in a small part of it, with the words "Why Hud?", and much of the 24-sheet blank. They wanted to create a mystery as to what the movie was about, in the hopes that people would not have preconceived notions and go see it, feeling that once they did, they would recognize what a quality movie it was, and this marketing strategy obviously worked, because the movie was very successful! Artist: Mitchell Hooks Important Added Info: As noted above, this very rare (and likely unique) "teaser" 24-sheet was intentionally largely left blank, so that people would immediately wonder what that meant and be talking about the movie! Note that this 24-sheet is one of a remarkable group of six 24-sheets (and one English 30-sheet) that we are offering in seven separate auctions. These posters (often referred to as "billboard posters") were always pasted to walls or billboards when they were used, so the only ones that survive are the few that didn't get used at the time. But VERY, VERY few 24-sheets survive from any movie from before 1990, because no one thought to save them, and the unused ones were almost always trashed. To give you a sense of how very rare they are, we have held over 1.2 million auctions, and of those, around 75 of them were for 24-sheets, and only a dozen of them were from before 1960! So not only are the seven billboard movie posters offered here extremely rare (and some may be the only remaining example in existence), but they are also some of the very small number of billboard movie posters still in existence period! Note that this twenty-four sheet was printed in 12 sections designed to overlap. This 24-sheet poster was folded in a way that makes it resemble a tri-folded six-sheet (only much larger, of course, as there are many more sections). But the length and width of the folded 24-sheet is just about the same as that of a folded six-sheet or three-sheet. This means that this 24-sheet needs to be sent in an oversized flat package, which will measure roughly 16" x 36", and approximately 2" high, and it will cost more to send than a regular sized package. Condition: very good to fine. The poster was clearly never used. There is very slight darkening on the edges of some of the pieces and some tiny tears in the borders and in small parts of some folds, but it likely has survived in as good condition as one would hope for a poster of this size from this time!
