An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Hallelujah, the 1929 King Vidor (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) all-black-cast African American musical ("A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Talking Singing Picture"; one of the first all-black productions from a major studio; in this case, MGM; a great story of a tenant farmer who sells his family's cotton in the big city, but is then lured by a dance hall girl into a crooked crap game, and he loses all the money, and he tries to shoot the man who cheated him, but he kills his brother instead, and that causes him to "find religion", and he becomes a preacher, but later, the dance hall girl finds religion too, and he dumps his faithful girl for her, but later, the crooked gambler shows up and the dance hall girl goes away with him, and the preacher tracks them both down and they both die, and the preacher is sentenced to the chain gang, and finds his faithful girl waiting for him when he gets out) starring Daniel L. Haynes, Nina Mae McKinney, William Fountaine, Harry Gray, Fannie Belle DeKnight, Everett McGarrity, Victoria Spivey, Milton Dickerson, Robert Couch, Walter Tait, and Matthew 'Stymie' Beard NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Al Hirschfeld Important Added Info: Note that first release U.S. posters from this movie are beyond rare (to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever sold a U.S. one-sheet). We auctioned a single U.S. lobby card 23 years ago, and it auctioned for $1,500. In 2015, we were consigned two individual heavily restored scene cards, one that had a great deal of restoration (and that one sold for $1,197) and the other with a somewhat lesser amount of restoration (and that one sold for $1,927). In May of 2018, we auctioned a third card, which had far less restoration than the previous two, and that one auctioned for $1,593. In August of 2018, we were consigned a fourth card, and that one had much restoration, and it auctioned for $1,100. We were consigned this fifth card in 2018, which had the same image as the one that sold for $1,593, but this one had much restoration. We have not been consigned another card other than those five, but now we have been reconsigned the last one we auctioned (in 2018), so it is still one of the only five lobby cards from this movie we have auctioned. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card had a 6" vertical tear starting in the right of the top border running between the "O" and "R" of "VIDOR", with paper loss in the "O" and in the border above it. It also had a similar tear further over in the right border running down the center of the border art figure. It had smaller tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, with a few stains and smudges scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in fair condition prior to restoration. The card was "starch backed", which means that it was moistened with a special starch solution, attached to a backing, allowed to dry, and then the card had touch up while it was backed, and afterward, the backing was removed. The card was starch backed and restoration was performed to the above defects. Given the extent of the defects, the restorer did a pretty nice job, and the card will display pretty well on the new owner's wall, but you can still see signs of the defects and the restoration, so read the above carefully and look closely at our super-sized images before bidding on this card.
