8b039 LOT OF 10 SET REFERENCE PHOTOS FOR DR. GILLESPIE'S NEW ASSISTANT '42 cool set images!

Date Sold 2/5/2012
Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price.

a lot of 10 reference test photos from Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant, the 1942 Willis Goldbeck medical doctor hospital mystery thriller ("All new! Baffling!"; "The case of the runaway bride!"; "From the stage play by Leon Gordon"; "Based on a novel by Ida Vera Simonton"; the movie concerns Dr. Gillespie having to pick a new assistant to replace the departing young Dr. Kildare, and he holds a contest between three competent young doctors; yet the posters for this movie center on the sexy "runaway bride", who stars in an unrelated fairly minor subplot!) starring Lionel Barrymore (in the title role as Dr. Gillespie), Van Johnson, Richard Quine, Keye Luke (one of the first Asian Americans to achieve success in mainstream American movies), Alma Kruger, Nat Pendleton, Horace McNally, and Susan Peters (one of the most tragic, yet oddly forgotten, stories of Hollywood female stars who rise and fall in a short time; she was one of MGM's most promising young female stars in 1943, and she married co-star Richard Quine, but in 1945, she was wounded in a hunting accident, and she became paralyzed from the waist down; she appeared in a movie and a TV show as a wheelchair-bound actress, without much success, and she divorced and starved herself to death, dying in 1952 at the age of 31). Note that the Dr. Kildare movies were made between 1938 and 1947, but that Lew Ayres left the series in 1942, and six more films were made WITHOUT Dr. Kildare, but WITH Dr. Gillespie (played as always by Lionel Barrymore), who became top billed in those six movies, and of course, they could not be official "Dr. Kildare movies", because the lead character was no longer at the hospital. Note that all of these reference set photos measure 8" x 10". Some of them have a visible clapboard in the image that gives the details about the movie and some do not (most of them have the clapboard). The studios would use these images for reference if they needed to shoot additional footage at a later time after the set was taken down. Almost all of the photos have "RETURN TO PROPERTY DEPT. METRO GOLDWYN MAYER" stamped on the back.

Condition: very good. The photos are generally in nice condition! All have three punch holes in the top border, because they were apparently stored in some sort of binder.
