Artist: Tom William Chantrell Important Added Info: Note that there is much discussion in the movie poster hobby as to whether the style C "Star Wars" posters that exist were actually printed in 1977, or whether they were printed at a later date. Some people say that the posters were only printed for use in other countries, which is why they have no ratings box. But the discovery in 2000 of these style C printer's tests (one of which is offered in this auction; see below for more about these posters) seems to negate that argument, because obviously the posters were intended to have a rating. It seems quite possible that after these proofs were printed, it was decided not to use this poster, and perhaps someone later convinced a printer to run off a bunch of these style C posters, but without the ratings box (perhaps this WAS for use outside the U.S.). Note that this printer's test was discovered in 2000! A man in southern California inherited a group of uncut posters (all printer's tests, see below for more on printer's tests), all from 1977, from a man who worked at a printer at that time. Most of the posters were from very forgettable 1977 movies, but included in this great find was eighteen examples of the style A "Star Wars" poster (with the original "77/21-0" NSS number), and thirty three examples of the style C "Star Wars" poster! The posters were consigned to Bruce Hershenson, who sold 18 sets of both a style A and style C poster and 15 individual style C posters. All of the 51 posters sold quickly, and very few have been re-offered for sale in the past seven years. Now, one of the original purchasers of a set of these two posters (plus two of the other printer's tests that were found, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Damnation Alley) has re-consigned them to Bruce Hershenson, and they are being offered for sale, in four separate auctions. Note that this is a very rare uncut printer's test! Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of posters as "test" posters. Commonly, they would leave the color chart on the left edge of the poster, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 28" x 41"). These printer's tests would then be shown to the various people in a position to "OK" them, and once they were completely approved, the printer would print the full print run of the posters. Not only is a printer's test far more rare than a regular poster, but it is also 100% genuine, there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction! Condition: very good to fine. The poster is in quite nice condition! Note that this poster is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
