An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A Six-Sheet Movie Poster (6sh; measures 81" x 81" [206 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) Honor Among Lovers, the 1931 Dorothy Arzner romantic love triangle melodrama starring Claudette Colbert, Fredric March, Monroe Owsley, Charles Ruggles (billed as "Charlie Ruggles"), and Ginger Rogers (extremely young in this role, playing a daffy "Gracie Allen" type part!). Note that this was a movie by trailblazing early female director Dorothy Arzner, and it has a very complicated plot about a rich businessman who wants to have a relationship with his secretary, and after she marries her boyfriend, he goes to great lengths to destroy their marriage, just so he can get the secretary back! Like most of director Arzner's movies, this one dealt with a very independent woman who "goes her own way" in life! Also note that Dorothy Arzner was a director from the 1920s to the 1940s, and she was the only woman director during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood ('20s to '40s) and she was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America. Arzner was a lesbian at a time when almost no females openly were, and she was surprisingly open about it, often dressing in "men's clothes" and wearing her hair short. She made many "women's movies" and movies with a "feminist" theme. After making "First Comes Courage" in 1943, she made training films for the U.S. Army WACs, and she never returned to making Hollywood movies, becoming a film teacher of directing and screenwriting, teaching at UCLA until her passing in 1979. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1931 movie paper from this Dorothy Arzner movie is incredibly rare. We had never auctioned any poster larger than a window card until we received this six-sheet (which is very likely the only surviving example)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. It appears that this was an unused example of this poster. It had small tears in the bottom of the right vertical fold and a 4" tear in that same fold above the "P" of "Picture". It had small tears in the right of the bottom horizontal fold (just above the pink area) and a few small tears in the bottom of the left vertical fold. Other than these few very minor defects, the poster had the slightest of wear on the other folds and was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed with virtually no restoration, and the above tiny defects (which are almost exclusively in the lower right solid black areas) were not restored. They are very minor, and certainly, any restorer could easily perform quick touch up to those tiny defects without re-backing the poster. This poster will look incredible on the new owner's wall!
