An Original Vintage English Movie Trade Ad (measures 8 3/4" x 11 3/4" [22 x 30 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More)

The Revenge of Tarzan, the 1920 Harry Revier & George M. Merrick silent Africa kidnapping romantic action adventure jungle thriller (based on the novel The Return of Tarzan "by Edgar Rice Burroughs"; Tarzan tangles with the evil Russian Nikolas Rokoff, who kidnaps Jane and takes her to Africa, but Tarzan rescues her) starring Gene Pollar (in the title role as Tarzan), Walter Miller, Karla Schramm, Armand Cortes, George Romain, and Estelle Taylor. Note that Tarzan of the Apes was the 1914 novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and was the basis of two movies, "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1918, and "The Romance of Tarzan" in 1919 (both starring Elmo Lincoln as Tarzan). "The Revenge of Tarzan" was based on the 1915 novel "The Return of Tarzan", and Gene Pollar took over the role of Tarzan. There is a fascinating bit of trivia about this movie. It was originally titled "The Return of Tarzan" (just as the source novel was), and some posters were printed with that title. But at the last minute, it was changed to the more dynamic title "The Revenge of Tarzan", and posters were printed with that title instead. This is the exact opposite of the situation that existed with George Lucas' "Return of the Jedi" many decades later, which was originally title "Revenge of the Jedi", but had its title changed at the last minute to make it sound less violent. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Artist: Hal Taylor
Important Added Info: From the 1920s on, studios would create elaborate trade ads, often in full color, and often using the finest artists of the day. They would run these ads in their studio yearbooks and exhibitor magazines, and they would also print those trade ads separately and mail them individually to theater owners, trying to get them to book that specific movie. Sometimes those books and magazines are separated and the ads, which now greatly resemble the individually printed trade ads, are sold individually. The trade ad offered here was removed from an exhibitor magazine. It can be framed and displayed (but many trade ads have different images on each side, so one must choose which side to display if it is framed!).

Condition: good to very good. The trade ad was removed from an exhibitor magazine but is otherwise in nice condition!
