Date Sold 12/12/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) A Canine Sherlock Holmes, the 1912 Stuart Kinder English silent canine dog crime detective mystery comedy short (about a detective tracking bank robbers but his dog does most of the work) starring Spot the Urbanora Dog (in the title role; Spot starred in 3 films for Urbanora, who were also known as the Charles Urban Trading Company). Note that this was apparently not based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character (other than an unlicensed use of the name), but instead on Hawkshaw the Detective, a character who debuted in an 1863 play and was later turned into a comic strip by Gus Mager. Interestingly, Mager used Hawkshaw after his character "Sherlocko the Monk" caused Doyle to threatened legal action, and we would be surprised if this movie did not have a similar issue! Finally, note that there seems to be a very strong case for "Spot" having been the first movie dog to star in his own movies! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this English movie! Also note that few people know that in the early days of British quads, they were originally in a vertical format (but they measured 30" x 40", just as they continue to do throughout the years). This is because so few of them survive, almost surely because of the massive paper shortages in England during World War II! At some point in the 1950s, they changed orientation to be horizontal, and they have remained that way to the present day. Finally, note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good to fine. The poster has an area of water staining in the upper right, but fortunately, it is almost completely in the background area. It shows most at the bottom of the water stain, which is in the window to the right of the policeman (see our image). Otherwise, the poster is in surprisingly nice condition, with minor wear on the folds, and a few small tears in the borders. It can be displayed as it is, or after a simple linenbacking, it will look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
