An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55") (Learn More) The Outlaw: The Story of Billy the Kid, the classic 1946 Howard Hughes biographical cowboy western romantic melodrama ("Trigger-fast action!"; "Sensation too startling to describe!"; "The last time Howard Hughes said he had someone to show you, he gave you two new stars... Jean Harlow and Paul Muni. Now he makes the same promise again and presents Jane Russell and Jack Buetel"; "At Last.. now you can see Howard Hughes' daring production The Outlaw"; produced by Howard Hughes) starring Jack Buetel (as Billy the Kid; "The Outlaw!"), Jane Russell (in her first big screen role!; "introducing Jane Russell"; "Mean.. Moody.. Magnificent"; "The woman who made him notorious!"), Thomas Mitchell (as Pat Garrett), Walter Huston (as Doc Holliday), Mimi Aguglia, and Joe Sawyer. The movie was almost released in 1941, but it was held up for five years due to censorship problems (there are posters and lobby cards from the aborted 1941 release, but they are extremely rare). Howard Hawks began this film as the director, but soon quit the project due to Hughes' constant interference. Hughes also designed the Cantilever bra for this film to better "show off" Russell's chest (who wouldn't wear it!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Marino Condition: good to very good. The poster had a large corner off of the bottom left, but fortunately it was almost completely blank white paper, although it did cause the loss of some portion of the small writing at bottom left (but it looks like just printer's information and not movie credits). The poster also had small paper loss at the crossfolds and creases, smudges, scuffs, and tiny tears on most of the foldlines. There was tape on the back of the bottom crossfold and on the back of tears and paper loss in the bottom 5" of the vertical foldline. There was tape near the middle of the right blank border that was roughly removed, causing surface paper loss and a similar piece of tape at the right end of the top foldline and in the right end of the top blank border. There uneven darkening around the edges of the image (more so in the middle of the "IL MIO CORPO"), and there is a peculiar area of border within the edges of the regular blank borders where the poster did not darken (it could not have been caused by a conventional mat, but it could have been caused by some sort of exotic mat, and it is solely in the blank borders). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The person who backed the poster did very minimal restoration to the above defects, and pretty much completely left the edges of the poster alone, just putting in blank white paper in the place of the paper loss in the bottom left corner. The poster was mounted on a very thin linen, and it has been roughly handled over the years and there are now creases in the excess linen around the edges of the poster, slightly extending into the very edge of the poster itself. If I owned this great poster, I would surely have it professionally re-backed. After proper restoration of the above defects, the poster will look fantastic, and there will be little paint restoration necessary in the images of the stars or in the lettering areas, other than in the exact areas described above.
