An Original Vintage Souvenir Program Book (measures 8" x 11" [20 x 28 cm]; 56 pages) (Learn More) WLS Prairie Farmer Family Album was a book produced annually by the WLS radio station from 1930 to 1957. The booklet featured images and information about the station employees, stars and guests. In the 1920s, Sears, Roebuck and Company was a major retail and mail order company. To get farmers and people in rural communities to buy radio sets from its catalogs, Sears decided to form its own station and in 1924, the station commenced officially, using the call letters WLS (for "World's Largest Store"). Sears sold the station to the Prairie Farmer magazine in 1928 and it moved to the Prairie Farmer Building in Chicago, where it remained for 32 years. The station experimented successfully in many forms of news broadcasting, including weather and crop reports. Its most famous news broadcast was the eyewitness report of the Hindenburg disaster by Herbert Morrison. Artist: Joe C. Sewello Important Added Info: Note that this is a really cool publication, for several reasons! For one, it has an image of George Gobel when he was just 20 years old! He had been singing on this radio station for 7 years, and of course, he would go on to great success as "Lonesome George Gobel" over the next decades. There is a full page on Pat Buttram, who was 25, and a page on The Hoosier Hot Shots. But the most interesting feature is a 2-page article about "television", and it is described as "the latest wonder of radio", and that "in the opinion of experts, it is here to stay". It adds that it will "not take the place of radio, stage, and the movies, but rather add to their enjoyment". In 1940, the biggest problem for television was that it couldn't be broadcast further than 25 miles, but of course, over the next decade, that problem was solved! See our images of all of the above described pages. Also note that we have pictured the front cover and an interior 2-page spread from this program. You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are some other pages you are not seeing. Condition: good. There are some light water stains and rippling scattered in the top and bottom of most pages, but they are not stuck together. Learn More about condition grades
