Date Sold 10/30/2011Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, the classic 1953 Byron Haskin science fiction (sci-fi) Martian extraterrestrial alien invasion action thriller ("From the ends of the universe... they are reaching for YOU!"; produced by George Pal; loosely based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells; about seemingly unstoppable aliens invading the Earth) starring Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne, Robert Cornthwaite, Lewis Martin, and Ann Codee NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this style B half-sheet from "War of the Worlds" is a legendary poster, and rightfully so! Whereas almost every other poster from the ad campaign has the "giant alien hand", this poster alone has the great "warships attacking" image. It is also incredibly rare. For the past 22 years, I (Bruce Hershenson) have wanted to auction this poster, but it has never been offered to me for auction until now (and it very rarely is offered for sale or auction anywhere, and there are surely very few examples that have not had professional restoration like this one). Now that I have finally auctioned this poster, I do not know if it will be 22 years before I am given another example to auction! Also note that this poster has a stamp on the back that indicates it came from the legendary horror/sci-fi collection of Ron Borst (the stamp reads "FROM THE COLLECTION OF Ronald V. Borst")! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and we intend to send it flat (due to its great value), but we would send it rolled or re-fold it if the buyer insisted on it. Note that we were requested by MPGrading to have this poster added to their "survey" of great posters (they told us they have thus far only seen three other examples of this poster, and one was restored). They have certified the poster as genuine, and have provided us with a certificate (which will be sent to the new owner; see the image of the certificate). Note that they graded the poster as "very good". Condition: good to very good. The poster has pieces of tape and tape stains around the edges, in the blank borders only. There is a 2 1/2" tear in the lower part of the left border that extends into the red background. There is some surface paper loss in the blank borders where tape was roughly removed. There are some pieces of tape on the back of the borders. The poster was folded once in each direction and was lightly partially folded an extra time, resulting in two partial extra vertical foldlines. There is darkening on the extreme outer edge of the borders. Other than the pieces of tape described above (which were put on decades ago), the poster has never had any restoration. The poster has many defects, but most of them are in the blank borders, and I would think almost any collector could happily display this great half-sheet just as it is, or certainly, any talented restorer could perform restoration and it would look even better!
