When she became an adult, she signed with 20th Century-Fox and starred in several of their top movies in the late 1930s. She also worked on radio and on stage. She successfully transitioned from young sexy actress to playing older roles, and she created the memorable role of the mother of the murderous child in Maxwell Anderson's stage version of "The Bad Seed", and she recreated that role in the film version in 1956 (she was nominated for an Oscar).
