An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36") (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had wear along the foldlines, pinholes, creases, smudges, and small tears around the edges, slightly extending into the edge of the image in a few places. There was a 1 1/2" diagonal tear at the right end of the bottom foldline, extending into the sleeve of Tobey's jacket, and a diagonal crease running from the middle of the bottom foldline through the girl's chin and into the right border, 1" below the end of the right foldline. The poster was well backed. The restorer chose to just touch up the minor defects, and that means you can see signs of the restoration from close up, but from any distance away, it is not noticeable at all, and the poster does not have that heavily restored "dipped in paint" look that many collectors avoid. The poster displays well, and I would think any collector would be happy to display this great poster on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
