Date Sold 6/19/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Autographed 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Publicity Still + Signed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11") (Learn More) John Glenn was an astronaut and U.S. Senator from the 1974 to 1999. He is best known as having been one of the seven original Mercury program astronauts. He became the fifth person in space, the third American in space and the first American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, on the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, circling the globe three times during a flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. He also has the distinction of being the oldest person to go into space when he boarded Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998! Glenn passed away in 2016 at the age of 95. Important Added Info: Note that this BOTH this still AND the letter have been personally autographed (signed) by John Glenn (he wrote a long 2-page letter that is signed at the bottom of the second page). He sent this nice still and long letter in response to a "Mrs. Lamb" who told him she was preparing a "vacation church school study course" and wanted Mr. Glenn's perspective on what was important to teens at that time. Also note that many celebrities kept multiple 8" x 10" (or smaller) copies of good publicity images of themselves to sign for fans, and also many memorabilia shops sold such copy stills themselves. While they are not original theater-used stills, they are usually excellent clear copies, with a great shot of that celebrity in their heyday, which, when signed by the celebrity, makes for a wonderful framed picture on any fan's wall! Note that our consignor long ago inherited an autograph collection from his father, who had obtained them in person many decades ago. After he inherited the collection, our consignor purchased a few more autographs, and then stored away the entire collection, and he has only now decided to auction the items. We feel it is extremely likely that the autographs are authentic, especially because they were obtained many years ago, before the autograph hobby became commercialized. Condition: very good to fine. The publicity still has a few minor creases. Each page of the letter was cut into three uneven sized pieces (perhaps so it could fit into a scrapbook), and they have been reassembled with clear tape from the back, but are otherwise in nice condition!
