Beginning in 1963, Michael Apted created a documentary for BBC television examining the lives of a group of 14 seven year-olds, from different socio-economic backgrounds. Each succeeding seven years, Apted re-examined the same people (over the years, a couple have dropped out). This feature film was made of the fifth documentary, including commentary and scenes from the four earlier ones. Since the release of this movie, Apted has released "42 Up" and "49 Up".
