A Linenbacked French Special Poster (measures 15 3/4" x 23 3/4" [40 x 60 cm]) (Learn More)

Bal Tabarin was a Paris, France cabaret from 1904 to 1953. It was opened by the composer and orchestra leader Auguste Bosc and was an immediate success. In 1928 Pierre Sandrini and Pierre Dubout took over the establishment, and Sandrini introduced ballet to his floor shows, and dress designs by Erte. Over the years performers have included: Florence Waren, Frederic Apcar, and Josephine Baker (the legendary black African American singer/dancer who appeared in a few movies and who performed in Paris cabarets, including this one, often topless)
Artist: Paul Colin
Important Added Info: Note that this poster was created to advertise this famous Paris cabaret in 1928 with great art of cabaret dancers by Paul Colin. We have seen that one auction company describes the woman in the art as Josephine Baker, the legendary black African American performer who Mr. Colin did draw for a Bal Tabarin poster in 1925, but we don't think the dancer in this image is Josephine Baker.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a small hole in the top right corner and some tiny tears and darkening in parts of the extreme outer edges of the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
