A 1952 Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Red River, the classic 1948 Howard Hawks Texas romantic family relationship cattle drive cowboy western ("Fighting like you've never seen before!"; "Cattle-drive, the longest in the history of the West!"; "Stampede as thousands of fear-crazed cattle run"; "Indian massacres and attacks from the Panhandle to Missouri"; "Love as deep and tender as their hearts were bold!"; "Manhunt with no quarter asked or given"; "Gun-play as breath-taking as a coyote's howl at night!"; "Not since 'The Covered Wagon' and 'Cimarron' has there been a motion picture like 'Red River'"; "There was glory at one end - fury at the other - and nothing but danger in between!"; "Howard Hawks who gave you 'Scarface' and 'Sergeant York' now brings you The Greatest Story The West Ever Told!"; "In 25 Years - Only Three! Covered Wagon, Cimarron, and now... Red River"; "Blazing in its action - thundering in its drama - stirring in the sweep of its fabulous production!"; "From the original Saturday Evening Post story 'The Chisholm Trail' by Borden Chase") starring John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, Joanne Dru, Harry Carey Sr., Coleen Gray, John Ireland, Noah Beery Jr., Harry Carey Jr., Paul Fix, Mickey Kuhn, Hank Worden, and Hal Taliaferro. Note that this movie was filmed in 1946, but was held back so as to not interfere with the major delayed 1946 release of "The Outlaw", co-directed by Howard Hawks (although Howard Hughes took all the credit!). It was intended to be Montgomery Clift's first movie, but this delay caused it to be released after "The Search", making it his second movie. Also, Clift and Wayne had very differing political views, and did not take to each other at all, but that likely helped the movie, since their characters were at odds with each other through almost the entire movie. Important Added Info: Note that the original 1948 one-sheet for this classic western had one of the most uninspiring images of any major movie ever released (and not only that, the same ad campaign was used on just about every poster)! Apparently, United Artists realized their error, and just four years later re-released the movie with far superior all new artwork! Condition: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. There were several areas of paper loss in the top 8" of the vertical foldline, but fortunately, it was almost entirely in the solid red area. There were separations, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss in the other foldlines. There was a 1/2" x 1/2" square of paper loss at the top of the "E" of "RIVER" in the main title. The borders had creases, tears, smudges, and areas of paper loss, and the person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over all the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. The restorer chose to paint over a fair amount of the solid red background area (no doubt to "even it out"), and they did quite a nice job, as it is not immediately evident that this was done when looking at the poster.
