An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Terry and the Pirates, the 1940 James W. Horne swashbuckling action adventure serial ("The favorite newspaper feature of 15 million fans hits the screen!"; "A Columbia Chapter Play"; "Based upon the famous Milton Caniff cartoon strip") starring William Tracy (in the title role as Terry), Jeff York (billed as "Granville Owen"; as Pat), Allen Jung (as Connie), Victor DeCamp (as Big Stoop), Sheila Darcy (as the Dragon Lady), Dick Curtis (as Fang), Joyce Bryant (as Normandie), Forest Taylor, and Jack Leonard (as the man in the gorilla suit). Note that Jack Leonard was one of the first men to play gorillas in movies. He was an extra in Tarzan the Ape Man, and the director did not like the way the men in ape suits were performing, and Jack Leonard said he could do better, and he was given the part! He and his wife made his gorilla suit and he studied real life gorillas to see how they moved and the sounds they made. He appeared in a dozen movies between 1932 and 1940, nine times of them as an ape! We don't know what happened to him after that (perhaps he passed away). If anyone knows more about Jack Leonard, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that Ray 'Crash' Corrigan and Charles Gemora were two actors who played lots of gorillas in movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Emil Van Horn and Jack Leonard each played around a dozen gorillas, and interestingly, that was all they did (no doubt all four of them owned a gorilla suit!).

Artist: Glenn Cravath
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this poster, and one was 9 years ago (which sold for $775) and one was 26 years ago (which sold for $1,380)!

Condition: very good to fine. The poster had tiny separation at the bottom crossfold. It had a slight partial extra vertical fold just to the left of the regular one between the middle and bottom crossfolds. Otherwise, the poster had the most minor of fold and border wear, and is in really excellent condition!
