In her early movies, she mostly had minor supporting roles in comedies, and she was billed as "Carol", but she added the "e" as she became a major star. One of her greatest successes was Twentieth Century, where she played a girl who has never acted, who becomes a great star under the tutelage of Svengali-like John Barrymore. Some of her other movies include: To Be or Not To Be, My Man Godfrey (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In the early 1930s, she married William Powell, but they amicably divorced, and several years later, she had a torrid love affair with Clark Gable, and they later married. Lombard died tragically in a 1942 plane crash when she was at the height of her career. She was just 33 years old. AND Janet Gaynor was a popular actress during the 1920s and 1930s. Because of her youthful appearance, many people think of her as a 1930s actress, but actually, she was born in 1906, and she moved with her family to Los Angeles in the mid 1920s, and she got a few bit parts in movies, but in 1926, she became a star with her performance in The Johnstown Flood. She signed with William Fox and starred in a series of movies, especially Seventh Heaven (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Sunrise (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Street Angel (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). She won the first Academy Award ever given for Best Actress, and unlike many other top silent actresses, sound did not create a problem for her, for she had a great speaking voice, and she remained just as popular. She starred as Vicki Lester in the 1937 A Star is Born (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; she was 31, but looked much younger). She retired in 1938, making a few appearances decades later. She passed away in 1984 at the age of 77. Important Added Info: Our consignor is a longtime dealer who acquired this 11x14 still directly from Janet Gaynor's son, along with other of her possessions, and while he does not have a Certificate of Authenticity, we are 100% certain the still was the personal property of Janet Gaynor, and based on the snipe on the back, it is surely from 1938 when these two great stars met, and no doubt, Miss Gaynor was given this still as a souvenir of that movie!
