Note that star Frank Fay's life strongly paralleled that of the lead character in the first version of "A Star is Born" (and that character may have been modeled on his life). He was a top vaudeville star in the 1920s, and he discovered Barbara Stanwyck as an extra, and he married her and appeared with her in a 1931 movie, which helped her quickly achieve stardom, but his alcoholism ruined his career, and their marriage.
