eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 7a0039 I LOVE TO SINGA 1sh R1944 legendary cartoon with Owl Jolson, Tex Avery, great art, ultra rare Date Sold 8/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A 1944 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) I Love to Singa, the classic 1936 Tex Avery animated animation family comedy jazz music cartoon short (a spoof of Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer, but with an owl family!) featuring the voices of Tommy Bond, Billy Bletcher, Lou Fulton, Bernice Hansen, Martha Wentworth, Jackie Morrow (who sings for Owl Jolson), and Tex Avery (as the police radio voice). Note that this was made before Tex Avery left Warner Bros. to go to MGM (and make incredibly memorable cartoons there), and the cartoon features not only Tex Avery's work, but also that of Leon Schlesinger, Chuck Jones, and Bob Clampett, which likely explains why it is such a wonderful cartoon! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that while we have previously auctioned examples of this stock poster from 1944/45 without this snipe (see below for more on this), we never before auctioned ANYTHING from this most classic cartoon short, I Love To Singa until we were consigned this one-sheet! We have also never before auctioned the snipe without the poster, and it is a wonderful occurrence to find both the poster and the snipe together, clearly from when they were used to advertise a showing of this exact classic cartoon in either 1944 or 1945! This one-sheet (Merrie Melodies) is the poster Warner Bros. first created in 1941 as a stock poster for theaters showing Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies Looney Tunes animated cartoon shorts and featuring great early art of Bugs Bunny on a swing painting a sign, alongside several other characters including Elmer Fudd, Sniffles the Mouse, Cecil the Turtle and Goopy Geer. Note that Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd made their first cartoon appearances in 1940, so this poster likely has either the first or one of the very first depictions of both classic characters (because Warner Bros. did not make individual posters for their cartoons), and you can clearly tell by looking at both characters who they are, but their appearance changed somewhat over the next few years to what they remained for decades after! At this time, Warner Bros. solely made stock posters like these for their cartoon series. They would print a number of paper snipes that measured 7 1/2" x 8", and those had the title of specific cartoons, along with an image from that cartoon, and theater owners could glue those snipes onto these stock posters. So there are no individual posters for any of these cartoons, but the next best thing is getting a stock one-sheet with the snipe for a specific cartoon. As noted above, this poster has an actual snipe attached to that area! But there is something else special about this poster. The 1941 version of this poster has "A Vitaphone Short Subject Produced by Leon Schlesinger" in the middle. In 1944, someone decided to change that to read "A Warner Bros. Short Subject", and they printed new posters, but they left the original small print on the bottom (although they stamped the back "1944/45"). We have only ever auctioned one of these one-sheets with the altered tagline, as opposed to 4 examples of the earlier version. Condition: very good. The poster has tiny separation at the bottom two crossfolds. It has creases in the left and right borders, with small tears at the right end of the top and bottom folds. The snipe was glued to the top of the blank area only. Learn More about condition grades
