An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! There are known examples where the primary background color is pretty much "red", and then others where the primary background color is pretty much "orange". Some people say that the poster was created with two different colors, while others say that the "orange" one-sheets are simply "red" one-sheets that were exposed to sunlight. I don't have a definitive answer, but because I have seen one-sheets in many different color ranges from pretty clearly red down to almost yellow (where the poster HAS clearly faded), that makes me feel it is possible that the posters were not printed in two different versions, but it is also possible that there were two versions, and some of each have simply faded (and this is further backed by my having seen "orange" versions that have extremely even coloring, which would seem like they were not faded at all). Also note that most collectors don't realize that Saul Bass did many different designs for this classic movie! All look very similar, with the classic swirl, but the two figures are different on many of the posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny tears, creases, and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds. It had a series of vertical tears in the lower right, slightly in the image, but more in the background area. It had pinholes and tears in the corners extending into the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone linenbacked the poster and likely did a pretty nice job of restoring it, but it was then displayed, and the reddish-orange color of the poster changed to a light orange. This would not have been so significant, except that there is a fair amount of restoration paint scattered throughout the image, and it did not change color in the way the poster color did, so it is now extremely noticeable. If I owned this poster, I would surely have a restorer paint over the background to make it one color (either lightening the areas with the restoration paint or darkening the areas without it). The poster would display far better, but of course, it would then have pretty substantial restoration, so bear this in mind before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
