An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 20 pages) (Learn More)

Paramount 1932-1933, the 1932 Paramount campaign book ("Paramount... the grand old rock of show business becomes a blazing volcano of hits!") sent to theater owners to encourage them to show Paramount movies. This book has 20 full-color pages that are each elaborately illustrated ads for movies Paramount was going to release in the end of 1932 or the beginning of 1933. Paramount released a larger version of this with pages that measured 11 1/2" x 17" and 112 total pages. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. This book has some of the nicest trade ads from the 1930s we have ever seen, including a wonderful one for Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus, where she is made to resemble the Venus de Milo statue, plus there are ads for Horse Feathers (spelled "Horsefeathers" in the ad), Love Me Tonight, Movie Crazy, and more!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this campaign book, but it is somewhat of a mystery. Paramount published a different campaign book for "1932-33" that measures 11 1/2" x 17" and has 112 pages, and it covers a number of the same movies that this one does. However, all of the images in that book are two-color, and all of the ones in this book are full-color. And this book has 20 pages, so it is much smaller than the other. Since this book does not have a hardcover or even a traditional "cover" (but it does have a first page that looks much like a cover), we think it is extremely likely that this book was originally published as part of an exhibitor magazine. That would especially make sense since Paramount could not have had the 11 1/2" x 17" version included in an exhibitor magazine, because it was so much larger, and they would have had to have made smaller versions of each page. Perhaps they instead chose to make this 20-page full-color version. This is a reasonable theory that fits all the facts known, but we have not seen an exhibitor magazine with this bound into it, so please do not bid on this very rare item unless you can accept the uncertainty described above.

Note that this campaign book comes from a newly discovered collection of 15 campaign books, which we are auctioning in 15 individual auctions. They belonged to a man who was a poster artist for a specific theater in the early 1930s, and he would receive these campaign books and then take ideas for posters from them! This meant that sometimes he removed a specific ad or a specific page or pages, so several of these 15 have one or the other defect (or both), which is always clearly noted in the condition section below. While it is sad that they are not in perfect condition, one can also focus on the fact that it is wonderful that he saved these at all, when most theater owners and employees simply threw them out after the movies have played, which accounts for their extreme rarity. Note that not only was he active at a time when many great movies were released, but he also saved some of the books that had the absolute best art, as is immediately apparent when you look at the 15 pressbooks in this collection (in their separate auctions).

Condition: very good. As noted above, this book may have been removed from an exhibitor magazine. It has creases at the spine that are most noticeable on the front and back covers. Otherwise, it is generally in nice condition!
