An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) A Dog's Life, the 1918 Charlie Chaplin silent screwball comedy ("The one and only Charles Chaplin in his first million dollar picture"; "In his first million dollar comedy"; "His Signature"; "A First National Attraction") starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin; as the Tramp), Edna Purviance, Syd Chaplin, Henry Bergman, Charles Reisner, and Brownie the Wonder Dog (in the title role). Note that Chaplin was so incredibly popular in 1918, that First National had to pay him a million dollars per movie to lure him away from his previous studio (which was a staggering amount of money in 1918)! Naturally, they wanted to get some advertising value out of their massive expenditure, so they advertised the movie as "His First Million Dollar Comedy". Brownie the Wonder Dog got his giant break in 1918 playing the title role in this film. This led to major stardom and a series of shorts with his name above the title. He starred in 53 movies through 1923, at which point he hopefully retired at the peak of his fame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there are two variations of this one-sheet, which measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]. The two look very similar down to the last detail, except for two differences. The other one has a green background throughout the image, and it has a printer's logo at bottom right. This one has a white background throughout the image, and does not have the printer's logo. It is interesting that the lack of the green background means that the fine details of the poster show much better on this one than the other one. It seems certain that a movie as popular as this would have had its posters printed in multiple locations (and in fact, we have seen examples of two seemingly identical posters from other movies from two different printers!). We feel certain both of these posters are from the very first release of this classic movie, and if one predates the other, it is impossible to say which is which. We auctioned the "green style" in 1990, when it sold for $17,600. We auctioned this "white style" in 1995, when it sold for $32,200. That very poster has been re-consigned to us by the person who bought it in 1995, and other than these two posters that we previously auctioned, we have never auctioned another first release one-sheet from this movie, and it will likely be many years before we auction another one! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, with some tiny areas of paper loss in the left edge of the left blank border and very minor other border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed by a top professional, and displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
