Godzilla was originally conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, but as the film series expanded, some stories took on less serious (and often silly) themes, portraying Godzilla as an antihero, or even a defender of humanity (who still steps on a lot of buildings). Godzilla has faced off against many monster opponents, including: King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Mothra and Gigan.
