eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 2z831 SPANKY MCFARLAND/BOBBY 'COTTON' BEARD 8x10.25 still '32 ultimate political incorrectness! Date Sold 11/9/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) George 'Spanky' McFarland was one of the most famous child actors of all time! He started making "Our Gang" comedies when he was four, and he made around 100 of them over the next 11 years. He retired from movies in 1942, and lived a movie-free life, passing away in 1993. AND Bobby 'Cotton' Beard was the younger brother of Matthew 'Stymie' Beard, who was an actor from the 1920s to the 1980s, and he was the star of numerous "Our Gang" comedy shorts, and one of the first black African American actors to achieve success in mainstream sound movies. "Cotton" only made five movies from 1932 to 1934, and we don't know why his career was so short, but he lived until 1999! Important Added Info: Is this not the most marvelous still? It dates from 1932 (verified by Dick Bann, leading Our Gang expert). Could you imagine a time when they would have a black star pretend to be a shoeshine boy for a white star? Times sure have changed! Also note that this still measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm].
UPDATED 11/09/2014: Note that this auction was incorrectly identified as showing Cotton's brother Stymie until right before the end of the auction, but the listing is now correct thanks to information provided by Dick Bann. Condition: good to very good. There are some faint brown stains and creases in the left border and a lesser amount in the other borders, with a few creases scattered in the still.
