An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (measures 40" x 60") (Learn More) Sherlock Holmes in Washington, the 1942 Roy William Neill Washington D.C. detective crime mystery thriller ("The mystery master in America!"; "Based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Basil Rathbone (in the title role "as Sherlock Holmes"), Nigel Bruce ("as Dr. Watson"), Marjorie Lord, John Archer, Don Terry, George Zucco, Henry Daniell, Edmund MacDonald, Clarence Muse, Thurston Hall, and Ian Wolfe NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that very few 40x60s from before 1950 are known to exist! It is likely that not many theaters ordered these posters (they cost around ten times the cost of a one-sheet, and around five times the cost of a three-sheet), and because they are usually silkscreened, they are more fragile than regular printed posters, and likely most of the few that survived did not survive in very good condition at all! I DO NOT KNOW OF A SINGLE OTHER 40x60 FROM ANY OTHER OF THE BASIL RATHBONE SHERLOCK HOLMES MOVIES! So the new owner of this great poster will not only almost certainly have the only surviving example of THIS poster, but will likely have the only surviving 40x60 from any Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movie, period! I certainly hope this poster ends up displayed on a wall (it certainly would seem reasonable that it should be purchased by someone who actually lives in Washington, but of course any collector anywhere would no doubt love to display this great poster!). Note that this poster has been paperbacked (see below). Prior to paperbacking, the poster had a vertical tear beginning near the center of the top of the poster, running down slightly irregularly through the left of the two M's of "MYSTERY" and "MASTER" and ending in the blue background above the first "A" of "AMERICA". There were some creases and tears in the blue background to the left of the first "A" of "AMERICA". There were creases and tears and tiny areas of paper loss in the tail end of the airplane and in the "exhaust" coming out of it. There were scattered minor creases throughout the poster, and some areas of surface paper loss in the solid colored areas (more so in the white letters). There was general smudging throughout the poster (quite common with older silkscreen posters like these). I was the one to make the decision on restoring this poster, and I did NOT want the poster to appear heavily restored (or "dipped in paint"!), so I instructed the restorer to only touch up those exact areas that needed restoration, and to not try to "make the poster look perfect" (but I told them to go ahead and use paint and new paper on the borders, which had many tears, stains, and smudges, as I do not mind the blank borders having a fair amount of restoration, as it is only blank paper). I am quite happy with the result! The poster displays quite well, but you can still see signs of the defects from close up, and you can see many of the smudges when looking close up, but from any distance away, they are really not noticeable or distracting. NOTE THAT BECAUSE THIS POSTER HAS BEEN BACKED ON TO A HEAVY BOARD BACKING (what is always used for 40x60s), IT CANNOT BE SENT ROLLED IN A TUBE, AND WILL NEED TO BE SENT IN A VERY LARGE FLAT PACKAGE. I DO NOT KNOW IF SUCH A PACKAGE CAN BE SENT OUTSIDE THE U.S. BY REGULAR MEANS, AND SHIPPING IT BY AN INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT METHOD MAY BE VERY EXPENSIVE, SO PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND BEFORE BIDDING, IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE U.S. (those who live in the U.S. can have it sent by the standard ways, and it will be more expensive because it is a very large flat package, but not exceptionally so). What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: very good.
