An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Thief of Bagdad, the classic 1924 Raoul Walsh silent Arabian Nights romantic action adventure fantasy thriller ("'He will steal your heart away!'"; from the story by Achmed Abdullah; about a thief in ancient Arabia, who poses as a Prince to win the hand of a Princess, but when he does, he confesses to her, and he is flogged and thrown out; he enters a contest to win her hand, but he must go on an extremely dangerous journey to win it!) starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (in the title role as The Thief of Bagdad), Snitz Edwards, Charles Belcher, Julanne Johnston (as The Princess), Sojin, Anna May Wong, and Noble Johnson (as The Indian Prince). Note that there is a 1940 movie of the same name which borrows elements of the plot of this movie, but is really not a remake (although both movies are really wonderful and are both "classics"!). Finally, note that Mitchell Leisen (well regarded director of 1930s and 1940s romantic comedies) did the wonderful costumes for this movie! He had started as a costume designer in 1921, and in 1922, he did the costumes for Fairbanks' Robin Hood, and after doing the costumes for this movie, he also became an art director, which led to his first directing assignment in 1933! Artist: Anton Grot Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this incredible half-sheet, and that was 7 years ago, when it sold for $10,500! It has one of the most classic and recognizable movie poster images there is, the incredible Anton Grot artwork of Douglas Fairbanks riding on a flying horse over the city of Bagdad! Also, note that there are several other examples of this poster circulating through the hobby that have really major restoration (entire areas of the image recreated, and repainting of the main image). This example we are currently auctioning, and the only other one we previously auctioned, both have significant restoration, but in both cases, the poster was mostly "all there" prior to restoration. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had approximately 1" of blank border trimmed from each side, slightly unevenly. It had six evenly spaced vertical folds, with some creases, small tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of the folds, with greater paper loss and tears in the vertical fold running through the right end of the horse, just touching the wing and foot, with some paper loss in the background above the foot. There was a long irregular tear running from the bottom of the horse's body across to the right, and then traveling down in the background to the right, ending 1/2" to the right of the bottom of the "D". The furthest right vertical fold falls in the right border, and there were many tears and small areas of paper loss down that fold, affecting the right border. There were some other tears and tiny areas of paper loss scattered throughout the image. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. Given the poster's substantial defects described above, it was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. However, I think this extremely desirable poster will display well on the new owner's wall, and of course, additional restoration could be performed. Learn More about condition grades
