An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Eskimo, the 1933 W.S. Van Dyke Alaska/Canada arctic adventure melodrama ("These women were helpless creatures of a strange moral code"; "A terrific drama of man and beast, the wildest strangest love story of the year"; "From the books 'Der Eskimo' and 'Die Flucht Ins Weisse Land' by Peter Freuchen"; about the daily life of Inuit Eskimos in then present day Alaska; it was mostly shot on location and presented in a documentary-like fashion; because it was pre-Code, they could show the then Eskimo tradition of "sharing wives", although the practice would soon disappear; the movie shows the Eskimos' daily hunt for food, and it also shows the effects meeting white traders had on them) starring Ray Mala (billed as "Mala"), Edgar Dearing, Peter Freuchen, Edward Hearn, Lotus Long, and Joe Sawyer. Note that director W.S. Van Dyke went on location to film this movie, and he hired real Eskimos to play the male Eskimo parts in the movie (because actors probably wouldn't have wanted to, plus they probably couldn't have done what was required of them). He found Ray Wise, who played the lead role of Mala the Eskimo, and he was so well received, that moved to Hollywood and changed his name to Ray Mala, and had a successful career! Japanese-Hawaiian actress Lotus Long played one of Mala's wives, but it is not known what the names of the other actresses were. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm]. Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
