An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style D One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Rage in Heaven, the 1941 W.S. Van Dyke & Robert B. Sinclair romantic love triangle crime thriller ("New Triumph by the Author of 'Goodbye, Mr. Chips!'"; "Screenplay by Christopher Isherwood and Robert Thoeren"; "Based on the novel by James Hilton"; a strange story of a secretary to a rich woman; she starts going out with the woman's son, who previously was in a mental institution; he encourages her to go out with his friend, and yet he still marries her, and then he takes over his deceased father's business and starts running it into the ground, apparently slipping into insanity) starring Robert Montgomery, Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders, Lucile Watson, and Oscar Homolka. Note that Ingrid Bergman said that Robert Montgomery did not want to make this movie, but that MGM ordered him to, and that he purposely gave a poor performance, and that George Sanders was completely disinterested in the movie and spent most of his time between scenes sleeping!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that in the past, we have auctioned two examples of the style C one-sheet and one example of the style D one-sheet from this movie, but all three of those posters were auctioned 10 or more years ago, and we have auctioned no first release one-sheets since then. This is probably because the movie received a very quick re-release in 1946, and the original posters would have been used or discarded at that time. Now we have been consigned one example each of BOTH the style C and the style D one-sheet, and it might be ten or more years before we are consigned either again! We are auctioning them in two separated auctions and this one is for the style D one-sheet.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and it had small circular paper loss in the top of the "ON" of "MONTGOMERY". It had some tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds. It had pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges, with some smudges and small stains scattered in the borders and background areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, and displays well, but the restorer painted over all of the borders and white background areas, to "even them out".
