Craig's Wife, the 1936 Dorothy Arzner domineering wife relationship melodrama ("What was the sin of Craig's wife?"; "The play that electrified Blase Broadway now lays bare the heart of a woman and her one consuming passion!"; "Craig's wife was the talk of the town... Craig's wife lived a life of shocking sham... Craig's wife locked her door to the world.... What was the sin of Craig's wife?"; "Behind locked doors she lived a life of sham!"; "The Pulitzer Prize play"; "From the play by George Kelly"; about a woman who marries for money and uses her husband for social standing, only to have her entire life implode with dire consequences) starring Rosalind Russell (in the title role as Harriett Craig), John Boles (in the title role as Walter Craig), Billie Burke, Jane Darwell, Dorothy Wilson, Alma Kruger, Thomas Mitchell, Robert Allen, and Raymond Walburn. Like most of director Arzner's movies, this one dealt with a very independent woman who "goes her own way" in life! Also note that Dorothy Arzner was a director from the 1920s to the 1940s, and she was the only woman director during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood ('20s to '40s) and she was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America. Arzner was a lesbian at a time when almost no females openly were, and she was surprisingly open about it, often dressing in "men's clothes" and wearing her hair short. She made many "women's movies" and movies with a "feminist" theme. After making "First Comes Courage" in 1943, she made training films for the U.S. Army WACs, and she never returned to making Hollywood movies, becoming a film teacher of directing and screenwriting, teaching at UCLA until her passing in 1979.

Note that in December 2021, we were consigned a truly remarkable collection of pressbooks (the first 37 were auctioned in our December Major Auction, and the most expensive one sold for $17,500!). In our regular auctions since, we have auctioned hundreds more from this collection. Now we continue to auction more of these pressbooks, which is absolutely the finest collection of pressbooks we have ever been consigned. In this set of auctions, most of the ones we are auctioning are larger pressbooks, mostly 11" x 15" or larger. Some of them were folded at one time, but they were stored unfolded for many years, so we left them unfolded, and unless the new owner requests otherwise, we will send them unfolded, because re-folding them would likely lessen the condition. Many of these are ones we have either never auctioned before or only once auctioned before, sometimes many years ago. These were collected decades ago, which was the only time that many of these could be found, and after these auctions are over it may be years (or decades!) before some of these are offered again. They ARE that rare! Note that pressbooks from the 1930s are almost never found in great condition, and some of them (especially those printed during World War II, including all the MGM ones from that time) are printed on newsprint, and are hard to find in even lesser condition. We have several images from each pressbook. We have given each an overall grade, and ask that you look at our images to get a good sense of the condition of that pressbook, because, since they have many pages, it would take forever to describe their condition in detail. However, EVERY one of these pressbooks is complete and uncut!
