A 1948 Realart Re-Release Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Edgar Allan Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue, the 1932 Robert Florey Universal crime horror mystery thriller ("The Super Shocker"; "Based on the Edgar Allan Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue"; set in Paris) starring Bela Lugosi (billed as "Dracula himself"; as Dr. Mirakle), Sidney Fox (billed as "Star of 'Strictly Dishonorable'"), Leon Ames (billed as "Leon Waycoff"), Bert Roach, Brandon Hurst, Noble Johnson (as Janos, The Black One), D'arcy Corrigan, Arlene Francis, Iron Eyes Cody, Joe Bonomo (famous early strongman, as one of the gorillas, and he also played a gorilla in 1929's "King of the Kongo"!), and Charles Gemora (as Erik the Gorilla; and amazingly, he reprised this role when the movie was remade by Warner Bros in 1954, 22 years later!). Note that this movie is considered to have been the consolation prize for Florey and Lugosi after they were replaced as director and star on "Frankenstein" by Universal. Note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thinner paper backing, it COULD be sent rolled, but we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package (because we fear that rolling it, even into a wide tube, would have an excellent change of damaging it, so we will only send it in a tube if the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage), but otherwise, we will ship it in a large flat package, so bear that expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had creases and fine surface paper loss scattered on parts of both folds. It had a large "X" written in the middle right of the poster, on the woman's legs and in the brown area above it. It extended into the "S" of "MURDERS" and the "O" of "MORGUE". Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed, but you can see slight signs of the large "X" described above. It is not really noticeable or distracting from any reasonable viewing distance, and the new owner of this poster will surely be happy to display it on their wall just as it is.
