A 1960 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that Paramount Pictures released this movie in 1958, and in 1965, it sold the rights to a number of movies to Universal Studios, including this one. Since this re-release if from Paramount, it is a certainty it is from between 1959 and 1964. We have heard that it is from 1961 from some collectors, but another expert points out that there are 1960 dated stills which seem to confirm the date. This poster LOOKS like it has Saul Bass art (the same as the famous "swirl" image used (with variations) on all the posters for the original campaign), but the version of it here does not match any of the originals. But in addition to that cool art, you get an image of Alfred Hitchcock, plus images of Stewart and Novak, and a montage of the best moments from the movie! We have only auctioned two examples of this poster in all our years of auctioning (making it more rare than the first release one-sheet!), and those two examples sold for $1,955 and $1,705! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time and it also had an additional vertical fold 2" to the left of the far right vertical fold. It had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. The top 1 1/2" of the poster was folded back at one time. It had creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered in the black background areas. It had pinholes and tape stains around the edges, with a few pinholes scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer did a wonderful job backing it, and the poster not only displays really well, but it doesn't show evidence of the restoration it has had. However, please bear in mind the defects it had and the restoration it had before bidding on this extremely rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
