The Original 1925 Artwork Created for the Program Book for "The Big Parade" (measures 25 3/4" x 40") (Learn More) The Big Parade, the classic 1925 King Vidor silent romantic World War I (WWI) American-soldiers-in-France military melodrama ("It's here! The film that you'll call the best you ever saw"; "Story by Laurence Stallings"; "King Vidor's production of Lawrence Stallings' great motion picture story following his stage success with 'What Price Glory'"; about an all-American boy who enlists in the Army in World War I, and he and his friends have a great time until they are thrust into combat, and the movie shows the horrors of war in a way that had not been done before, and the boy returns home after losing a leg; there is also a romantic subplot with the American G.I. having a brief affair with a beautiful French girl) starring John Gilbert ("The Star"), Renee Adoree ("as Melisande"), Hobart Bosworth, Claire McDowell, Claire Adams, Robert Ober, Tom O'Brien, Karl Dane, and Rosita Martini. Note that MGM had no idea what they had when this movie was being made, but King Vidor was able to sell them on the potential of the movie, and convince them to spend a huge amount of money filming authentic battle scenes, and the movie was a major critical and financial success! Important Added Info: Note that offered here is the original artwork from the program book from "The Big Parade". VERY FEW ORIGINALS FROM ANY 1920s MOVIES ARE KNOWN TO HAVE SURVIVED! They are even more scarce than originals from 1930s movies, which themselves are extremely scarce. In the case of the original artwork offered here, the artist drew the image that appeared on the program book cover, and at a later time the title and other information were added by different hands (this was standard practice at that time). This original was purchased decades ago by a man in the motion picture industry, and it hung on his walls for many years. Unfortunately, we do not know the name of the MGM artist who created it, but if anyone e-mails us that information, we will post it here (it appears extremely likely that it is the same artist who drew the many movie posters for this classic war movie). There may be other genuine original artworks from movie posters of John Gilbert movies surviving, but if there are, we are unaware of them! Condition: very good. This artwork is an oil painting, and it is mounted on a stretcher, and it was framed on a wall for many years. The artwork has suffered one small bit of damage during the years in which it was displayed. There is a area in the lower left in the background that was bumped, and it scratched off a small amount of the paint in the background, and made a small tear in the canvas (someone put a piece of white tape on the back of the canvas covering that tear). Other than that minor defect, the artwork has no defects that I can see, and likely looks just as it did when it was created 80 years ago! Learn More about condition grades
