An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

Children of Divorce, the 1927 Frank Lloyd silent romantic love triangle divorce melodrama ("From the novel by Owen Johnson"; a wild story of two women in love with the same wealthy man, and they have all been friends since childhood, and one of the women has true love with the man, but the other tricks him into marrying her, because he is rich, and afterwards, she won't let him divorce his wife, because all three were the children of divorced parents, and they don't want that to happen to them, and then they have a baby, and their marriage gets worse and worse, and the wife finally wants to get divorced, so she can marry another rich man, but when she finds out that he would never marry a divorced woman, she takes poison, which allows her friend and her husband to finally share their true love; interestingly, the bad wife, and the villain of the piece is played by Clara Bow!) starring Clara Bow, Esther Ralston, Gary Cooper (in his third credited movie role!), Einar Hanson, and Norman Trevor. Note how much smaller Gary Cooper's billing is than the two female leads! Shortly after this, he became a major star and never again got lower than top billing! Note that Clara Bow was the most famous "flapper girl" of the mid to late 1920s (she became known as "The It Girl" after the character she played based on the popular novel by Elinor Glyn). She had a major role in Wings, and was Paramount's biggest star at that time. But she had a notorious private life and seemingly "settled down" when she married cowboy star Rex Bell in 1931 (she had two children and she retired from movies), but sadly in 1949 she went into a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt (she had had psychiatric issues for quite some time) and she was released but never returned to her family, and lived alone until her death in 1965. Finally, note that James Hall was originally cast for the role that Gary Cooper ended up playing. Cooper only got the part because he was dating Clara Bow, and she insisted on him being cast. Once he became a star, he ended their affair, and then he had other affairs with other actresses he appeared with!

Important Added Info: Note that this window card (and several others we are auctioning in this part of our major auction) has been linenbacked. They were recently backed by a restoration studio that prefers linenbacking to paperbacking, because there is less alteration to the card. There is no right or wrong to this, just a matter of personal opinion. On each of those window cards, the restorer left 1/2" of excess linen on all four sides (see our image).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The card was stained throughout, with water stains and other stains. It had paper loss in the left of the card. Overall, the poster was in poor to fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's many defects, it was pretty well backed, but it required a substantial amount of paint restoration throughout the card, including in the faces of the stars. You can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, so bear this in mind before bidding on this card.
