An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 14 1/2" x 20 1/4" [37 x 51 cm]; 36 pages). Also included is an ad supplement that has 25 pages, and also a herald that has 4 pages. (Learn More)

The Great Ziegfeld, the 1936 Robert Z. Leonard (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biographical romantic love triangle musical biography ("The greatest entertainment of our time!"; "300 girls"; "50 stars"; "10 shows in one"; "The sensation of the century!"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; a highly fictionalized biography of the legendary showman, Flo Ziegfeld) starring William Powell (in the title role as Florenz Ziegfeld), Myrna Loy (as Billie Burke), Luise Rainer (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; as Anna Held), Frank Morgan, Fanny Brice (in a cameo as herself!), Virginia Bruce, Reginald Owen, Ray Bolger (in a cameo as himself!), Ernest Cossart, Nat Pendleton, Harriet Hoctor, Joseph Cawthorn (billed as "Joseph Cawthorne"), Joan Holland, Raymond Walburn, and Esther Muir. Note that this movie gave Luise Rainer her second consecutive Best Actress Oscar. But soon after, she turned her back on Hollywood and moved to Europe. Perhaps that partly explains why she had such a long life (she passed away in 2014 at age 104)!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this pressbook! Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald which is pictured next to the pressbook below. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Almost every Academy Award winning movie would have a special "Academy Award winner" supplement. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)!

Condition: fair, WITH CUTS. The section of the pressbook that is printed on newsprint has several cuts (all of those pages are printed single-sided and contain newspaper ads and stories, and they were intended to be cut). The very large supplement that is printed on a much better quality paper has much staining around the edges of the cover of that section, but its pages are complete (and they include many great promotional and advertising tie-in items for this movie, likely none of which exist. The full-color covers (which include great full-color images of most of the posters on the back cover and great different art on the cover) are complete, but the back cover is partially separated from the fold-over piece, and there is some tiny paper loss. A 3" x 3" section of the front of the tipped-in herald has been cut out. There are also stains around the edges of the covers. Obviously, one would much prefer to find a complete example of this very rare oversized pressbook, but we have never auctioned one before and don't know if even one other exists in any condition. And there IS a great deal of wonderful material included. So we will leave it to the bidders to decide what effect on the value the cuts and staining have. Please look at all our images prior to bidding.
