An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) On Your Toes, the 1939 Ray Enright musical ballet romantic comedy ("Based on the musical play by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart and George Abbott"; about a male vaudeville dancer who quits to become a serious composer, and then he finds out that one of his female friends from vaudeville has now become a ballet dancer, and he writes a ballet for her) starring Vera Zorina (billed as "Zorina"), Eddie Albert, Alan Hale Sr., Frank McHugh, James Gleason, Leonid Kinskey, Gloria Dickson, and Erik Rhodes. Note that this musical, with music by Rodgers and Hart, was a huge success on Broadway, and the first show to incorporate ballet dancing (with choreography by George Abbott). The star of the Broadway show was Ray Bolger, and Louis B. Mayer signed Bolger to a Hollywood contract, but apparently passed on this musical, perhaps afraid of the ballet connection. So Warner Bros. bought the rights, and they couldn't have Bolger, so they used Eddie Albert instead. The movie did quite well, and its most memorable song is "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue". Also note that star Vera Zorina was a German ballet star hired by Sam Goldwyn after he saw her in an English production of the stage version of this movie, and he brought her to Hollywood. She had a few successful movies, including this one, but after being cast as Maria in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1943, she was fired after two weeks, and she left Hollywood a few years later.
