The Shakedown, the 1929 William Wyler boxing sports boxer-meets-orphan romantic comedy melodrama (the movie borrows some of its plot from "The Kid" from 1921 with Charlie Chaplin, and "The Champ" in 1931 with Wallace Beery borrows much of its plot from this movie; about a down and out boxer whose life is changed when he gets involved with a young orphan boy) starring James Murray, Barbara Kent, George Kotsonaros, Wheeler Oakman, and Jack Hanlon. Note that this movie was originally filmed as a part talkie, but was re-shot as a full sound movie. It was completely restored by the Eastman House in 1998! Also note that this was one of director William Wyler's first non-western movies! Surprisingly, he started in westerns, and made nine of them before he got the chance to branch out, and he became one of the finest directors ever! Sadly, the exact opposite is true of actor James Murray. He won praise from critics for his starring role in King Vidor's The Crowd, which was his first major role. Unfortunately, the pressures of Hollywood got to him and a couple of years after this movie, he became an alcoholic who could not hold down a job. He became homeless, and when he coincidentally ran into King Vidor while begging for change, he refused Vidor's offer of an acting job. His body was discovered in the Hudson river in 1936. He was 35.
