DOCKS OF NEW YORK ('28) DOCKS OF NEW YORK ('28) WC, regular OR search current auctions Auction History Result 7j1017 DOCKS OF NEW YORK WC 1928 Josef von Sternberg, art of George Bancroft looming over the City! Date Sold 2/2/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Movie Window Card (WC; measures 11 3/4" x 14 1/2" [30 x 37 cm]) (Learn More) The Docks of New York, the 1928 Josef von Sternberg silent New York City waterfront sailor romantic melodrama ("Story by John Monk Saunders"; about a rough ship worker on leave in New York City who saves a girl from committing suicide, and because he is drunk and caught up in the moment, he marries her, but when he sobers up, he prepares to return to his ship, perhaps abandoning her; some consider this Josef von Sternberg's best movie!) starring George Bancroft, Betty Compson, Olga Baclanova (billed as "Baclanova"), Gustav von Seyffertitz, Lillian Worth, Guy Oliver, Mitchell Lewis, May Foster, and Clyde Cook NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this window card has much light staining (see our image). Because the staining is significant, but can be hard to see from the front of the card, we also photographed the back of the card as well as the front, because sometimes the staining shows better on the back, and that will let bidders better know what restoration this card needs. We didn't do this on all the window cards we are currently auctioning, just ones where we thought seeing the back would be helpful, like this one. Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 11 3/4" x 14 1/2" [30 x 37 cm]. Condition: poor. The card was found in the back of a frame where it had been used as a backing board for a picture (many framers in the 1920s and 1930s would use window cards for this purpose, and they would trim them to the size of the frame, not caring that they were cutting into the image!). In this case, the trimming, which was to 11 3/4" x 14 1/2", affects the all four sides of the card, and you can see what is missing by looking at our image. Since most of the title, image, and large credit remain, I would think many people could display this card as is, but please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
