An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12 1/2" x 18 1/2" [32 x 47 cm]; 29 pages) (Learn More)

The Return of Chandu (The Magician), the 1934 Ray Taylor black magic fantasy horror serial sequel ("He's back! The Master of Magic and Thrills"; "with a Distinguished Cast") starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as Chandu), Maria Alba, Murdock MacQuarrie, Phyllis Ludwig, and Clara Kimball Young. Note that Chandu the Magician was a radio show that started airing in Los Angeles in 1931, and went nationwide the following year. That was also when a movie adaptation, called Chandu the Magician, was made. Two years later, this sequel, The Return of Chandu, was made, and this time, Bela Lugosi played the lead role, after having a supporting role in the prequel. The show went off the air in 1936. It was revived in 1948 as a 15 minute show and ran for two years.

Artist: Wentworth
Important Added Info: Note that this is an unusual pressbook! It has two sections (one marked "ADVERTISING" and one marked "PUBLICITY"), and they are stored together in a heavy folder that opens down the middle. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

UPDATED 07/12/2013: Note that we previously auctioned a pressbook for this film which included a cardboard mask of Bela Lugosi. We do not know if this mask was available in all pressbooks or if it was only included in some as an additional supplement. The pressbook offered here does NOT include the cardboard mask.

Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The pressbook has a folder that has some minor wear around the edges. It has two interior sections, and the one called "advertising" has the covers separated at the spine. Otherwise, the pressbook is in pretty nice condition!
