An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Paisa (released in the U.S. in 1948 as "Paisan"), the classic 1946 Roberto Rossellini Italian World War II (WWII) neo-realist military romantic melodrama ("The lives and loves of GI's in Italy"; "English dialogue made in Rome"; set in the waning days of World War II, about the U.S. soldiers in Italy, and their interactions with the local citizens, as presented in six different segments; because director Rossellini wanted the movie to be as realistic as possible, he mostly cast non-actors in all of the main roles) starring Camela Sazio, Robert Van Loon, Dots Johnson, Alfonsino Pasca (billed as "Alfonsino"), Gar Moore, Maria Michi, Harriet Medin (billed as "Harriet White"), Renzo Avanzo, William Tubbs (billed as "Bill Tubbs"), Dale Edmonds, and Cigolani. Note that Dots Johnson was born Hylan Johnson and was a black African American actor who, along with most of the other actors in this movie, made his acting debut here. However, many of the other actors never appeared in other movies, but Johnson went on to appear in several notable movies including No Way Out and The Joe Louis Story. Also note that Italy had been devastated in World War II, and it was a major accomplishment for this movie to be filmed right after the war. It was released in September of 1946 at the Venice Film Festival, and then released throughout Italy in December of 1946. It did not open in France until September of 1947, and in the U.S. until March of 1948, with most other major countries having their first releases over the next two years. First release movie posters from this movie from ANY country are incredibly scarce. First release movie posters from Italy are virtually unknown! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Antonio Mancinelli Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this most classic Italian movie! Because it was released immediately after World War II, MGM handled the distribution in Italy, surely because there was no Italian distributor capable of doing so soon after the war! First release Italian posters from this movie are incredibly rare, and we have never auctioned this first release Italian one-panel before, and it absolutely deserves to hang in a museum! Condition: good. The poster had pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges. It had an area of paper loss in the left of the bottom border that extended into the printer information and the "I" of "PRODUZIONE". There was a 6" tear with tiny paper loss above that area and a 4" tear 2" to the left of that area. There was also a thin strip of paper loss in the bottom 7" of the left blank border, but only blank white paper was affected. Someone many years ago put tape on the back of all those border defects. They also put a piece of tape on the back of the top two middle crossfolds, and also put tape on the back of the right half of the bottom horizontal fold. They also put very tiny pieces of tape on the back of tiny tears in the bottom half of the middle vertical fold. All of that tape has bled through to the front in varying degrees, but it is fortunate that much of the bleed-through is in the borders. Obviously, this poster has very real defects, but it is very true that this extremely rare and extremely desirable poster can have professional restoration performed, and while it will require some paint restoration, it will not need a lot, except in the borders, and in the bleed-through in the right half of the bottom horizontal fold (which is mostly in the credits), and after proper restoration, this poster will look incredible (and I believe it should be in a museum!).
